Tropaeolum majus, spp
Nasturtiums are easily identifiable by their large round leaves upon a single fleshy stem, followed by bright orchid shaped flowers in tones of fluoro-orange and yellow, reds and creams. Grows in lush spreading banks. Both leaves and flowers are edible, both having a strong peppery flavour rounding off with sweeter noted depending on the time of year. They too like rich moist soils, but will grow almost anywhere, and fix nitrogen, leaving behind large amounts of humus material and a good seed bank at the end of the season. Seeds can be pickled in place of capers, leaves and flowers added to salads, sandwiches, and pesto. Can be roasted into chips. Can add to soups etc, but better eaten raw. Full of minerals, vitamin C, abundant and easy to recognise. One to teach the kids. Eat the leaves to help combat urinary infections, promote the formation of red blood cells, and fight colds and flu.
